Shipping lots of books

I've got to ship lots and lots of books from Michigan to California. Any suggestions?

I don't need them to get there fast, but I do need them to get there in good shape. So far my front-runner is the U.S. Postal Service's "book rate" (they actually call it "Media Mail"). Sounds like I can ship a 50-lb. (22 kg) box of books for about $25 including $1000 of insurance.

This guy at Mailboxes Etc. was trying to convince me that I should use UPS, but they can't make any money off USPS and anyway MBE is owned by UPS so that makes sense. The cost to ship UPS is about twice as much, too.

The other thing is how to pack them. I wonder how banged-up books tend to get? These are mostly expensive hardcover books. If I'm feeling really paranoid then maybe I'll double-box them with a layer of styrofoam peanuts between the boxes.

Thoughts?
